SUMMARY:Cherry Blossom Run
DESCRIPTION:All but a few have heard of the stunning Cherry Blossoms in Washington D.C. in the spring.  Yet it is not widely known that there are spectacular Cherry Blossoms as well in Branch Brook Park in Newark\, NJ.  On this beautiful spring day on April 21\, 2018\, Bergen Runners organized a Theme Run to enjoy the magnificent view that springtime had to offer. \nThe Branch Brook Park loop is a 4.3 mile loop trail that is suitable for runners of all skill levels. After taking the group photo in front of the “Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart”\, which looks identical to the “Notre-Dame de Paris”\, our runners broke out into several smaller groups based on their skill levels. Even though groups were running at different paces\, they all enchanted by the marvelous cherry blossoms and stopped to snap some pictures. \nWe ended the theme run with new found appreciation for the beautiful cherry blossoms backdrop right in our neck of the woods!  We suspect some of us may skip a trip to Washington D.C. next year and return to the Branch Brook Park instead for a quick getaway and Cherry Blossoms sighting. \nEvent photos

DESCRIPTION:Add River Edge 5K Race to your “Must-Attend” yearly race planner! This year the local friendly 5K community race just got a little louder and more competitive with Bergen Runners crashing the party and stealing the spotlights. \nAfter 8 weeks of 5K training for the beginners\, the novice runners proudly accomplished their first 3.1 mile race on a mildly hilly course. Parent-child team was another theme that inspired many fellow runners and viewers. Our elites runners run and shined throughout the course.  \nThe best part was the award ceremony when our runners were called onto the podium to accept medals for the top runners in their age group.  Our Captain Renny won the Fastest Resident Runner.  Most importantly\, the event organizers recognized the club as the Best Presented Club on the race day.  There was no doubt Bergen Runners were most visible on the race route today.

SUMMARY:Spring 5k Pasta Dinner / Photographer Workshop
DESCRIPTION:A potluck party the night before the 5k race. Our runners brought delicious home made specialties while Sam Liu\, our photographer\, gave club remembers a wonderful demonstration on how to take good sports photos. Captain Renny Shih shared some important tip for the first time racers. SUMMARY:Spring 5k Training Week 7 - River Edge 5K Practice Run
DESCRIPTION:One week before the River Edge 5K\, Bergen Runners met at the Cherry Hill School to practice the 5k route together. Two club photographers Sam Liu and SH also came for the practice shooting to find the perfect picture spots. Many beginner runners surprised themselves with new PR by running this race-like run and were very excited about the possibility of logging a faster time a week later. \nHot red bean soup\, sweet congee\, pumpkin pie were served in the school parking lot to warm up runners on this chilly April morning. SUMMARY:NYC Half Marathon
DESCRIPTION:It was a chilly cold morning for the NYC half marathon day. This year’s new course started from Prospect Park in Brooklyn\, passed Manhattan Bridge turned into FDR drive\, through iconic Times Square and finished in the New York Central Park. We ran in freezing temperature with our Misty Mountain Runners friends and other 21\,965 runners. The course was somehow challenging especially the hilly finish in Central Park but the crowd cheers compensate for everything. Despite the cold weather\, some our club members worked as volunteers whole morning. They guided runners and people traffic\, greeted and took photos for our runners near the finish area. They deserved a grand round of applause just like all the runners today!

SUMMARY:Spring 5K Training - Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Our first cross training yoga class for the 5k group took place at the River Edge library.  While we have some experienced yogis\, it was the first yoga class for many runner. Sun salutation\,  chaturanga and warrior 1\, 2 were made easy thanks to our light-hearted yoga instructor Jojo Lee. Meticulous and caring\, JoJo paid close attention to individuals and made sure that everyone was had a good alignment. 90 minutes introduction session passed so fast and runners couldn’t wait to get back to learn more!

SUMMARY:Spring 5K Training Week 2 - Saturday Group Run
DESCRIPTION:We combined our weekly regular group run with a 5K training at the Saddle River County Park this morning. Many beginner runners worried about the cold temperature but were pleasantly surprised it wasn’t as bad as they thought.  Most of the runners were able to completed the 5k distance with a slower pace or 3 minutes run / 1 minute walk interval. Chris did a great job leading the run-walk group.

DESCRIPTION:Our Spring 5K training officially started this week as we ran our first 5K training group run together on Saturday afternoon.  We will meet regularly once a week in the Saturday afternoon in Van Saun Park.  5K is friendly distance for both adults and kids so it can be a good family activity. Many beginners choose to use run and walk method so we will focus mostly on this group of runners through out the journal. To implement this method\, we need to have a good tool to help us with the interval timing. We recommend RunKeeper for this purpose since it has a very good interval feature and has the ability to track the running route at the same time.  See below how to setup interval workout in Runkeeper.

SUMMARY:Year of the Dog Run
DESCRIPTION:Our second “Year of the Dog Run” is designed for advanced runners. The map was creatively  drawn by Xingyang while the route was planned by Renny.  Five fierce ladies started near River Dell Middle School and traversed through the Oradell neighborhood before returning to River Edge. A perfect cute 8 mile dog was formed on our GPS app and we highlighted it with a “2018” route. Running in circles in a parking lot to create the eye was the most fun part and we can’t wait to create a route for the year of the Pig next year! \n

DESCRIPTION:It’s January 2nd on the lunar calendar\, a day which the Chinese tradition calls for married women to return and visit their parents’ home.  We gathered this morning to celebrate this day in our own way. Many runners dressed in red and Sam Liu used the vintage camera to take few classic shots for us (which turned the clock back to our youth).  Xinyan planned a Year of Dog route and even practiced the routes few times the day before to ensure that the shape of the route would map out as planned. Many runners followed her lead and a route resembling a small cute dog with the number 2018 was born in Saddle River Park. DESCRIPTION:Jojo Lee\, a yoga instructor from Mahwah\, led us with a yoga warm up today.  We also had Sam Liu\, an award winning photographer\, joining us for the first time. Riding on a bike\, Sam followed our runners as they completed a 12 mile journey today.  He captured countless incredible photos and memories that our runners will forever cherish. \nEvent photos

DESCRIPTION:Few of us got together in the Sunday afternoon to run together after being trapped by the snow for few days . The temperature was so low that we have to have the face covered while running. Were we crazy? Maybe. Did we have fun? Definitely. We also got many great shots thanks to Jerry always being our dedicated photographer.
